Accomplishments & Initiatives...

 

  • In 1984, Initiated Single Member Districts Voting System for City of Gainesville on behalf of the Alachua County NAACP  

  • In 1988, Highway 441 was re‑named the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Highway by the Florida Legislature, reaching more than 30 miles through Alachua County from Columbia County to Marion County.

  • Since 1989, over $215,000.00 in scholarships awarded to high school seniors in Alachua County by the MLK Commission.

  • In 1989, Initiated a Charter Amendment for Equal Opportunity Director for City of Gainesville.

  • In 2002, City of Gainesville voters approved the Charter Amendment for Equal Opportunity Director.

  • In 2000, while campaigning for the Alachua County Commission, I was an advocate for the voter approved Alachua County Forever Land Acquisition Program.

  • In 2003, initiated, adopted and funded Alachua County/City of Gainesville 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness

  • In 2003, initiated, adopted and funded Alachua County & City of Gainesville Plan East Gainesville Development Plan (PEG).

  • In 2004, initiated, adopted and funded the Criminal Justice Mental Health Substance Abuse Grant CJMSAG

  • In 2004, created an Entrepreneurial Charter School Plan for at risk students in cooperation with the City of Gainesville and the Alachua County School District.

  • In 2005, initiated the NACO Pharmacy Discount Card Program for Alachua County residents to receive a reduced price for medicines.

  • In 2008, initiated the Alachua County/City of Gainesville Hunger Summit. Which led to the adoption of the Hunger Abatement Plan (HAP).

  • In 2008, initiated Strike Out Hunger Food Drive to address food insecurity in Alachua County.

  • In 2011, chosen by the National Association of Counties (NACo) to visit with President Barak Obama at the Whitehouse to discuss issues facing the nation’s counties.
